An acute hospital situated on the edge of Aylesbury and with a worldwide reputation for advanced medical practice, Stoke Mandeville is in the forefront of health care. As the home of the National Spinal Injuries Centre, its name is synonymous with high level specialist treatment. However, the hospital offers a number of other services including a burns unit, plastic surgery and ophthalmology services, rheumatology and orthodontics, trauma and orthopaedic surgery .
The staff development mission statement encapsulates four main principles:
Stoke Mandeville is being transformed with an extensive refurbishment and reconstruction programme that will upgrade facilities. Clinicians and the Primary Care Trust along with GPs, staff and patient representatives have all had the opportunity to influence the redevelopment so that it best serves the patients’ interests.
New wards will allow for a greater measure of privacy and dignity and will be more strategically located to improve patient treatment. There will also be new day case theatres that will meet the needs of Aylesbury Vale people now and into the future.
The costs of construction will be £40 million and will be met by Private Finance Initiative. For more information, please go to the Stoke Mandeville website at www.buckshospitals.nhs.uk. Enquiries can also be made to John Summers, Director of Facilities and Estates on 01296 316615.
